Arylene Diimide Derivatives as Anolyte Materials with Two-Electron Storage for Ultrastable Neutral Aqueous Organic Redox Flow Batteries

This work prepared various ammonium-functionalized naphthalene/perylene diimide electrolytes. The NICS calculations unveil that the planar conjugated structure endowed them with excellent aromaticity in multiple states, where enhanced aromaticity in highly reduced states improved the stability of two-electron storage (NDI0: -14.31, TPDI4+: -38.74), while the viologen's aromaticity decreases ([(NPr)2V]2+: 5.46). The NDI/FcNCl-based AORFB significantly outperforms viologen regarding two-electron storage stability, achieving a capacity retention rate as high as 98.44% after 350 cycles, which provides valuable insights for the development of multi-electron storage.
