A new π-conjugated viologen derivative, 3TPhDPyMeOTf, was designed. Experimental and theoretical studies have demonstrated its inhibitory effect on bacterial growth both in vitro and in vivo, demonstrating a broad-spectrum antibacterial effect. The photosensitizer also exhibits excellent bacterial membrane staining, making it suitable for bacterial imaging. The design of this photosensitizer provides a new direction for the development of potent photosensitizers and photodynamic therapy.
