Narrow Band Gap Chalcogenoviologens for Electrochromism and Visible-Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution.

Chalcogenoviologens were first synthesized via introducing heavy chalcogen atoms into the viologen skeleton, which showed multiple redox centers, reduced reduction potential and narrow HOMO–LUMO gaps. Chalcogenoviologens not only could be used in electrochromic devices, but also serve as both photosensitizers and electron mediators for visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution, this strategy greatly simplified the photocatalytic system.
